Business Strategy for Success: Lean Into What Makes You Different

When you buy a widget, it may not make a difference who you buy it from.

A stapler is a stapler. A laptop is a laptop. You compare features, price, and reviews—and you make a purchase.

But when you buy a service, it is completely different.

You are buying a human experience. You are buying the person.

I talked about this on the Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur podcast, and it is something I see play out every day working with financial advisors.

Why Service Businesses Are Different

In a service-based business, you are not selling a product. You are selling expertise, experience, and trust.

People are not just buying what you do. They are buying how you do it, why you do it, and who you are when you do it.

That changes everything.

Because people are attracted to people who know themselves, are comfortable with who they are, and create value around what makes them different.

The Advisors Who Win

The advisors I work with who are most successful are not the ones trying to be everything to everyone.

They are the ones who:

  • Know their strengths and lean into them. They double down on what they do exceptionally well.

  • Are comfortable being themselves, not mimicking someone else. They build services around their own personality, values, and vision.

  • Create services around what makes them genuinely different. They understand what they bring to the table that nobody else does and they make that the center of their business.

You cannot fake authenticity. People feel it when you are being genuine and when you are not.

Stop Trying to Be Like Everyone Else

The biggest mistake I see service-based business owners make is trying to be like everyone else.

They look at what successful people are doing and try to replicate it.

But replication is not differentiation.

The advisors who stand out are the ones who lean into what makes them different not what makes them the same.

So here is my challenge:

Stop trying to be like everyone else. Stop mimicking what you think success is supposed to look like.

Know yourself. Be comfortable with who you are. Create value around what makes you genuinely different.

That is your competitive advantage. That is what people will buy.
