The industry is splitting.
On one end: efficient, low-cost, largely automated planning delivered at scale.
On the other: specialized advisors solving specific problems for a specific group of people.
The uncomfortable part is the middle. Generic, undifferentiated, moderately priced service is precisely what technology does well and cheaply. That is not a comfortable place to be standing in five years.
Two things worth understanding about the specialist side:
1. Depth moves you up, not out. When you go deep on one client type, you stop being one vendor among many and start being the expert solving that painpoint no one else can. That role is hard to automate and hard to replace.
2. Technology is the enabler, not the offering. Nobody hires you because you use a great planning software. They hire you because of your expertise, the human touch, and the next level conversations.
Neither side of the split is the wrong answer. Being stuck between them is.
