What Does "Agentic" Mean For Advisors

Like many of you, I am already tired of the AI buzzwords: tokens, slop, agentic. Despite that fatigue, it is important to understand how we can harness these innovations, especially in human-centered, service-based businesses like financial advising.

In a rare crossover between wealth management and Whoop (the health and fitness wearable company), Whoop's most recent podcast episode discussed the pitfalls of blindly implementing AI and chasing the next shiny innovation.

Whoop Podcast: The Hidden Cost of AI - Episode

AI and agentic tools offer massive productivity gains for individuals, teams, and society, BUT they cannot and should not replace the creativity, connection, and human touch we bring to our businesses.

Humans bring the judgment and empathy. AI drives the research and implementation. Together, this powerful team can surface deeper insights, remove the mundane, and speed up processes, delivering more value to the client with less time and effort.

This month, we look at the ways advisors can harness AI, and why the human side of the business matters more, not less.

Spotlight: Altruist and the Agentic Advisor

Altruist is building Hazel as a suite of planning agents for financial advisors rather than a single tool. On September 1, it announced a new AI-powered financial planning agent within Hazel that builds bespoke plans across six workflows: retirement planning, investment optimization, cash flow analysis, estate planning, tax strategy, and insurance and risk.

The financial planning agent joins tax planning as the second pillar of what the company describes as an expanding suite. Founder Jason Wenk says the agent lets one advisor handle "much of the work that a shop full of specialists would do" in a fraction of the time.

The key is how these agents work in tandem, much like a team of employees. Hazel uses AI to gather and understand client information, the associated agents analyze it and develop individualized plans, and the advisor synthesizes the results and brings the human element to the relationship.

Productivity Gain #1: The Administrative Burden Shrinks

For most advisors, the hours disappear before and after the meeting, not during it. Across a review season, that adds up to hundreds of hours spent on:

  • Preparing client folders and pulling account, tax, and planning data for each meeting

  • Taking notes and transcribing them into the system of record

  • Creating action items and then executing them

  • Drafting follow-up emails to clients

Agents now handle most of this. Work that once took hours of data gathering and manual entry into planning modules is reduced to a few clicks and a couple of minutes waiting for the agents to finish. The advisor's role becomes review and approval rather than assembly.

Productivity Gain #2: Proactive Planning Becomes the Default

This is the bigger opportunity. When client data lives in one system, with context from accounts, past conversations, and the advisor's own strategy, an agent can surface ideas before the client asks or before the advisor can carve out the time. Think of a Roth conversion window after a down market, a cash flow gap ahead of a known expense, or a beneficiary review triggered by a life event.

Better still, the agent can lay out multiple alternatives with the pros and cons of each. Advisors can run scenarios live with clients, adjusting savings, investment, and spending assumptions to see how each choice moves the plan. The conversation shifts from "here is your plan" to "here are your options, and here is what each one means for you."

The Human Edge: Why Agents Make Advisors More Important

Agents operate on the information they are given. An agent is only as good as what feeds it, and much of what feeds it comes from you. Garbage in, garbage out.

That makes three human elements more valuable than ever:

1. Better client conversations. An agent cannot ask the follow-up question that uncovers a client's real worry about an aging parent or a business exit. Digging deeper in the meeting is what gives the agents the context they need to produce advice worth delivering.

2. Simple, streamlined operations built around a value-driven service calendar. Agents amplify whatever process they sit on top of. A clear annual client service calendar tells the agents when to prepare, what to analyze, and which proactive touchpoints matter. Without it, you just get faster chaos.

3. Targeted pain points you solve better than anyone. When planning agents make solid advice widely available, advice alone stops being the differentiator. The firms that win will be known for solving two or three specific problems for a specific type of client.

The Takeaway

Let the agents be the amplifier. The advisor who benefits most will have already done the foundational work:

  • A defined Ideal Client Profile

  • A clear focus on solving that client's top 2-3 pain points

  • Sound education and a human-centered approach that builds trust

  • Solid operations that make proactive service repeatable

Agents can prepare the meeting, draft the plan, and model the alternatives. Only you can understand the client well enough to know which alternative is right, and help them act on it.
